Chocolate Cake

Can you imagine a world without chocolate? It’s the ultimate comfort food with absolutely zero contenders for the throne. That delicious melt-in-your mouth goodness just can’t be beaten. There are many great men and women in history, but I definitely have a soft spot for a certain Dr James Baker, who discovered how to make chocolate back in 1764!

Dr James Baker figured out that he could make chocolate by grinding cocoa beans between two massive circular millstones. Just under a century later, a guy called Joseph Fry went on to create the first modern chocolate bar, and by 1868, a small company called Cadbury (sound familiar?!) was selling boxes of chocolate sweets in England.

What is German Chocolate Cake?

German chocolate isn’t actually named after the country! It’s named after Samuel German, the inventor of this type of sweet baking chocolate from Baker’s Chocolate Company. When used to create chocolate cake, the result is a delicious taste that is neither too sweet nor too bitter, combined with buttermilk to give it that extra boost.

The coconut pecan icing adds a yummy texture that’s equally creamy and crunchy too!  So to sum it up, German chocolate cake is a not too sweet, not too bitter, not too creamy, and not too crunchy perfect balance of chocolatey heaven – and well worth a try!

How Many Calories in a Piece of Chocolate Cake?

Ahhh, the dreaded question. Well, a 138g slice of chocolate cake with frosting has an estimate of 537 calories, but you can knock that down by 200 calories if you remove the frosting (seriously though, why would you do that).

Let’s be real, everyone knows that chocolate has a lot of calories, but as long as you’re eating everything in moderation as part of a balanced diet then you shouldn’t overthink having a yummy slice of this decadent treat now and then. I know I certainly don’t! Dark chocolate also has some pretty great health benefits, such as being high in antioxidants which can improve heart health and lower your risk of infections.

When is National Chocolate Cake Day?

I don’t know about you, but in my world every day is National Chocolate Cake Day!! Which is probably why it has so many different dates around the world! Officially, the U.S, National Confectioners Association notes 3 dates for National Chocolate Day: July 7, October, 28. December 28, and another for International Chocolate Day which is held on September 13.

If you have a look online you’ll also see the month of February referred to as National Chocolate Lovers month, so I think it’s safe to say that the world likes to celebrate chocolate as much as possible!
