Homemade Onion Soup Mix

Onion soup mix is one of the most famous home cooks cheats there is, a readymade packet filled with savory flavors that can be used in a hundred different ways, from flavoring a dip to forming the sauce base for a casserole.

However, like with most all pre-mixed things, it just cannot hold a candle to a seasoning blend that you make yourself.

This recipe for a homemade onion soup mix should taste miles better than the store-bought equivalent, with the added benefit of the fact that you can customize it to your liking!

Feel free to substitute out some of the flavors for others so as to make your perfect ideal blend of onion soup mix.

How To Change Up the Flavors Of This Soup Mix

This soup mix’s main job is to provide a good backbone of savory flavor that you can use to make a delicious soup or help flavor another recipe.

However, don’t take the ingredient list in this recipe as complete gospel – you should change it to suit your needs!

While the main flavors here are definitely the onion powder and dried onion flakes, you can easily substitute or alter some of the other ingredients to give your spice mix an entirely different flavor.

For example, try substituting the dried beef granules with chicken granules. The difference is subtle, but it will have a homier, comforting feel, though it will lack a bit of that richness that makes it really useful as the base in other recipes.

You can also make it a bit more spicy by adding in chili powders or just cayenne.

A little bit of dried mustard powder can also help amplify the flavors in your soup mix. Just make sure not to put too much, as otherwise, you might find that it tastes too much like mustard!

Just play around with the spices and flavorings until you settle on something that you enjoy. If you aren’t sure, give it a little taste on your finger and imagine what it will taste like when the flavors are dulled down a bit.

Finally, keep an eye on your salt levels – you want it to be salty enough to be noticeably salty when you try a little bit, but not so salty that it ruins any dish you put it in! Be conservative and add more only if you really think it needs it.

How To Use This Soup Mix In Other Recipes

Onion soup mix is a classic not only because it makes for a delicious homemade onion soup but because it can be used in so many other tasty applications.

To make a simple onion soup mix, just mix a good amount of soup mix powder with some hot water and let it simmer for a few minutes to hydrate it.

However, to really get the most out of your onion soup mix, you should try using it as the base in other recipes.

Mix this onion soup mix with some sour cream and mayonnaise, and you get a tasty French onion dip that tastes way better than anything you could possibly get at the store!

Or try using it as the flavoring liquid for a casserole, or even use it as the main seasoning for a pork or beef roast.

While it can be tempting to only see this spice mix as a way to make soup, try and instead think of it as a savory blend of different umami flavors. Use it in basically anything where you want a deep, rich, and oniony flavor, and you can’t really go wrong.
