Karlynn’s Recipe Notes

  • Skill Level: This recipe is easy to make for home cooks of all levels!
  • Total Time: Your BBQ Sauce will be ready in just under 15 minutes – perfect for a last-minute dinner addition.
  • Variations: Switch up the flavor by using Dijon instead of yellow mustard, or add a splash of maple syrup for extra sweetness. You can also mix in spices like smoked paprika, cayenne, or even your favorite hot sauce for a little heat. Use this BBQ sauce on some Homemade Burgers, Air Fryer Chicken Wings, or classic Salt and Pepper Ribs for a delicious finish!
  • Tools For This Recipe: You will need a medium-sized heavy-bottomed saucepan, a whisk for mixing, a spoon for tasting, and an airtight container or jar for storing.

What You’ll Need for Ingredients

Ketchup: Ketchup forms the base of this sauce, adding delicious tomato richness with sweetness, acidity, and depth all in one.

White Vinegar: Vinegar brings the tang that balances out the sweetness and gives BBQ sauce its signature bite. Karlynn’s Tip: Apple cider vinegar is a classic swap, but you can also try rice vinegar or even a squeeze of lemon juice for a different twist – just taste as you go!

Brown Sugar: This adds a deep, molasses-like flavor that rounds out the sauce and gives it that classic sweet BBQ taste.

Seasonings: A simple mix of salt, black pepper, onion powder, and paprika builds the base of the sauce. Karlynn’s Tip: Don’t feel limited here! Try adding spices like oregano, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, or a dash of hot sauce to make it your own.

Karlynn’s Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Homemade BBQ Sauce

  • Ketchup Substitutes: No matter how hard you try, it’s almost impossible to escape the presence of ketchup in BBQ sauce. It’s a key ingredient that adds so much depth, tang, and balance. But if you prefer to skip it, you can use tomato sauce or crushed whole tomatoes instead! Just be sure to simmer the sauce long enough to reduce and concentrate the flavors – otherwise, it might taste too thin or overly acidic. You may also need to add a bit more sugar to balance everything out!
  • Serve It the Right Way: Homemade BBQ sauce really shines when paired with something crispy and salty. Try it with my Air Fryer Potato Wedges, Air Fryer French Fries, or anything that lets the sauce stand out. And if you’re keeping things easy, frozen fries work just fine too!

Storage Instructions

This BBQ Sauce actually keeps quite well, thanks to its acidic and sweet ingredients!

Refrigerator: Store the cooled sauce in an airtight container or jar, making sure it’s well sealed to prevent air exposure. It will keep in the fridge for up to 1 month. Give it a stir before using and always check for signs of spoilage, like mold or separation.

Freezer: For longer storage, transfer your sauce to a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months, following USDA food safety guidelines. Thaw in the refrigerator, and stir well before using it again!
