Karlynn’s Recipe Notes

  • Skill Level: This Classic Shrimp Cocktail is so easy to make. It’s a basic recipe, so don’t be intimidated – any home cook can handle this!
  • Total Time: You’ll have this appetizer on the table in just 35 minutes.
  • Variations: You can easily customize this recipe to your taste! Add more lemon juice for a brighter, tangier sauce, or serve your cocktail with extra sides like Classic Homemade Garlic Bread, a fresh Wedge Salad or my Beer Cheese Dip.
  • Tools For This Recipe: You will need a pot for boiling the shrimp, a large bowl, a slotted spoon, a knife, and 4 martini or coupe cocktail glasses.

What You’ll Need for Ingredients

Shrimp: Use 24 good-quality large shrimp, peeled and deveined with the tails left on (about 6 per person). Karlynn’s Tip: If you’re using martini or coupe glasses, use jumbo shrimp so they stand tall and don’t get lost in the glass!

Cocktail Sauce: This recipe shines thanks to the homemade cocktail sauce, so don’t skip making it from scratch. Karlynn’s Tip: Making your own sauce gives you full control over the flavor, but you can absolutely use a store-bought cocktail sauce if that’s what you have on hand.

Parsley: Use about 4 sprigs of fresh parsley to add a bright, herby finish to your dish.

Lemon: Lemon adds a zesty pop of flavor that balances the richness of the cocktail sauce and shrimp. Karlynn’s Tip: Rolling the lemon on the counter before juicing helps break down the fibers so you get every last drop!

How To Make Classic Shrimp Cocktail Recipe

This is a quick overview of the recipe. The full list of ingredients & complete step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card below.

  1. Prepare the homemade cocktail sauce according to the recipe instructions.
  2. Fill a pot with water and add 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt.
  3. Once the water starts to boil, add the shrimp and stir until they’re just pink. You’ll know they’re ready when they reach a safe internal temperature of 145°F.
  4. Remove the shrimp, place them in a bowl of ice water to cool off, then drain.
  5. Add about 1 or 2 ounces of the cocktail sauce to each glass.
  6. Slice the lemon into quarters and add 6 cocktail shrimp around the serving glass.
  7. Add a lemon wedge with a sprig of parsley, serve, and enjoy!

Karlynn’s Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Classic Shrimp Cocktail Recipe

  • Buy Frozen Shrimp: Frozen shrimp that are already peeled, deveined, and have the tails left on are a huge time-saver. All you need to do is quickly cook them – no messy prep required. This is hands-down my favorite cheat!
  • Try Pre-Cooked Shrimp: To really save time, grab jumbo pre-cooked shrimp. I’ll be honest: no one at your party will notice the difference! Jumbo sizes look best, though they can sometimes be tricky to find pre-cooked.
  • Add a Flavor Boost: For a flavor upgrade, quickly pan-fry the shrimp in a little fresh garlic and simple seasonings before serving!

Storage Instructions

This shrimp cocktail is best served fresh, but you can prep parts of it ahead of time to make entertaining a breeze!

Refrigerator: The shrimp can be cooked up to 1 day in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for serving. If you have leftovers, cooked shrimp will keep for 3–4 days refrigerated. Your cocktail sauce can also be made 1 day ahead and kept refrigerated in a sealed container.

Freezer: If you need to freeze your shrimp, freeze them and the cocktail sauce separately in airtight, freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months, according to USDA food safety guidelines. Be aware that freezing may change the texture of the shrimp. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving!
