We first moved into our home in 2020 just before lockdown came into effect and since then, I’ve been wanting to change out the fireplace. It doesn’t suit my aesthetic and I really don’t like the floor to ceiling painted wall in the middle.
As you can see in the video above, my cabinets with my glass collection fit beautifully on either side of the fireplace wall but the wall colouring, tiny fireplace and my monster TV all don’t really fit in with the look I wanted (first world problems, I know).
Redoing this and putting in a proper fireplace in order to be able to hang stockings at Christmas has always been a goal of mine and this year, we finally had a chance to move forward with the renovation. You see, I’m a bit of a Christmas fanatic and may have what some could call a “problem” but I prefer to see it as a passion.
To get started with this renovation, I reached out with someone who I’ve known for quite some time; Christina at Hearthwood Design + Build. Once we had an approved design from them, we decided to go with a nice electric fireplace with a much larger footprint in the wall. We also removed the existing large TV and placed it in a different space in the house. This meant we had a full redo of the center wall on our hands – but I was SO ready for it.
First, however, I had the daunting task of moving all of my glass and the cabinets out of the way so the contractors could work. That was a process in itself but we got it done.
Next stop was Gemco Fireplaces to select the style we wanted for the wall. We ended up choosing the Napoleon Elevation X fireplace as it had tons of customization options and looked very close to a real wood burning fireplace for that homey feel.
Once we selected the fireplace, it was up to finalizing a design and getting to work replacing the painted wall and building out a framework for the new fireplace and surround.
Of course, we needed to ensure everything was perfect so we hired a well respected inspector to look over the work.
Once approved by Mr. Noodles, we were allowed to proceed.
As you can see, I chose to surround the fireplace with a sparkly white quartz, which I absolutely love and the mantle they built for me is perfect for stockings (so excited for Christmas this year!). Next it was time to add the fireplace.
Again, we needed it inspected so of course, we brought back the expert.
Now it was time for the finishing touches and to begin the exciting process of moving everything back into place so I could see the final results but before I did that, I decided to replace my very bright and colorful carpet with a more subdued one to make the space look bigger and I’m THRILLED with how it turned out.

I love it because it’s very thin, very soft and makes the space look much larger than before.
I CANNOT wait for Christmas to show you all what everything looks like but for now, it’s time to prep for my other favorite season: Halloween!
