No flavor combination works better in almost every application than cheese and onion. However, calling a dish “cheese and onion” always makes it sound a little bit childish.

Well, this isn’t a cheese and onion pie; it’s a Scalloped Onion pie, thank you very much, and it is incredibly delicious.

For more similarly scalloped dishes, why not try my recipe for Scalloped Potatoes and Ham, or my Creamy Scalloped Corn Casserole?

What Kind Of Onions Are Best For This Onion Pie?

While most people are probably used to only using one type of onions, there are actually as many different types of onions as there are apples.

This recipe is a traditional way to use up extra onions, so it makes sense that they were traditionally made using the most common variety, the large yellow onions that you find in every supermarket.

However, you don’t have to feel obligated to only use yellow onions – use whatever onions you like!

You could use red onions to make the whole pie have a lovely red / purple color, as well as giving it a deeply rich sweetness. Or, if you live in Georgia or somewhere you can easily get them, try using Vidalia or other types of sweet onions to get an almost dessert-pie taste.

Basically, just choose whichever onions you like best – just remember to maybe season the sweeter onions with a bit more salt to help counteract an overpowering sweetness they might bring to the table.

How To Serve This Scalloped Onion Pie

This onion pie is a perfect way to not only use up leftover onions but also to help stretch meals in harder times.

If you are just making this to enjoy some tasty cheese and onion filling, then feel free to serve it either as a main course or a side dish.

Served as a main, it would probably need something a little extra on the side to help bulk it out for a full meal.

As a side dish, though, it can serve as both the carbs and the vegetables for a regular dinner. This would go perfectly alongside a big piece of steak or a roast dinner, lending a nice bit hit of savory sweetness and creaminess to your main dish.

  7. Krista Michelle Gray says

I just read the directions & heya! The way I make my mac & cheese is similar…make a roux with onion before tossing in the macaroni and shredded cheese. I’m really craving this now…Wednesday night supper will be Onion Pie night 🙂

  8. The Kitchen Magpie says

It’s VERY much farm food, like, all you had is onions in hard times, that kind of rural frugality.

  9. The Kitchen Magpie says

That’s so crazy, it might just be awesome!

  10. Debbie Wolf says

I have tried to recreate it but I made it too saucy. I am glad to have a recipe in print that I can work off of next time. I think it is traditional country eats, the person who made it for me said it was a family thing. They were from northern Quebec.

  11. The Kitchen Magpie says

It is a fabulous vegetarian main for sure! You are the only person that I’ve heard who’s actually eaten this before!

  12. The Kitchen Magpie says

I know eh?Me neither. I still can drool over pictures!

  13. Krista Michelle Gray says

I just ate…but, that means absolutely nothing, lol! Yum!

  14. Debbie Wolf says

I have had this dish before. A friend in Quebec used to serve it as a main vegetarian dish with a salad. It makes a great summer time dinner.

  15. eatswritesshoot says

This does indeed sound like a great recipe and one I look forward to trying in the doldrums of winter. Kudos on the reflective nature of this post and getting us all to think about what it meant to get through winter. Root cellars and cold rooms used to be the difference between a good winter and a hungry an bland one …. A good reminder of where we came from and who we ultimately still are …. Thank you for sharing.
