Crock pot Dumplings on soup concoction

I didn’t know you could do dumplings on top of stews in the crock pot, so I figured maybe someone else out there doesn’t know. It is just a simple little recipe for tasty dumplings, but I love that you can throw them in the crockpot as well. I just tried it and it worked. Who knew?

Ingredients :

1 cup of flour
2 tsp of baking powder
1 tsp of sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp butter/margarine
1/2 cup of milk

Mix your dry ingredients together.

Cut in the butter.

Add you milk and mix well.

Drop by large tablespoonful onto the top of your stew/soup concoction in the crockpot.

The recipe card directions do not match the ingredients. And seem to be missing several steps. Unfortunately I’m unable to use this recipe1 star

  2. Kayla says

Haven’t made this (sounds delicious), just looking over the recipe and noticed, in the actual recipe section, your ingredient list calls for chopped rotisserie chicken but the instructions are written for using (raw) chicken breasts. I know the recipe is for your homemade dumplings but the instructions seem like they were for a not-from-scratch version of this dish with store-bought dough instead of homemade? Still going to use the recipe just throwing that out there! Thx!

    • Karlynn says

Hey it looks like my recipe plugin is pulling a completely different recipe! The recipe in the card is for chicken and dumplings. Let me get my tech guy, AKA my husband,on it because the recipe is only for basic dumplings.5 stars

  3. Jackie Wilson says

Good basic recipe. I have tried many similiar. They all take much longer for dough to cook. Thought tin foil would help a lot. Did not. Still took 2 hours on high. May be my crock pot, It does boil though.4 stars

  4. Kelly says

Made the dumplings to go in my crockpot chicken & dumplings dish and they were PERFECT! So yummy!5 stars

  5. Shawna says

Quick and easy! Nice texture. Just what I was hoping for! The tinfoil is a great tip. Thanks!! (I see some reviews from years ago. I’m glad this recipe is still circulating!)5 stars

  6. Deb says

It would help if you answered some of the questions – high or low setting for the dumplings?

    • Karlynn Johnston says

It’s says high in step 3, and I don’t say to turn it down or change it. It’s time-consuming to respond to all these questions when the answer is in the recipe!5 stars

    • Michelle says

I used self rising flour instead of using the baking powder. Turned out amazing! Love the aluminum foil trick! It definitely makes sure it’s cooked through! Thank you!

  7. Pat McDonald says

Crock pot setting High or Low Please answer this question

  8. Liza says

Amazing. Easy peasy and family loves them. We look for an excuse to make stew in order to have these dumplings!5 stars

  9. Matthew Bourque says

These are the best dumplings. Great recipe!

  10. Marily says

Amazing, they came out wonderful cooked and not doughy! I have tried several different recipes and they were a big flub. My family loves my chicken and dumplings done in a pot but not in the crock pot. No one could believe it when I came with these. I cooked mine in my Ninja with the high bake setting for 30 minutes. Yummy. Thank you.5 stars

    • Matthew Bourque says

It can’t get any better than these dumplings, great recipe!

  11. SM says

These turned out amazing!! My stew cooked for a couple extra hours with the dumplings in and they were perfection!5 stars

  12. Pat says

Thank you for a wonderful little recipe. I needed to make chicken fricassee, such a wonderful Fall day, but due to an afternoon project, needed convenience of my slow cooker. Until I found your recipe, I was frankly horrified with the number of recipes calling for cans of condensed cream soups in their chicken and dumplingd, with biscuit dough for the “dumplings”. I cook from scratch, so those recipes would not work for me. Your recipe allowed me to make dumplings almost as good as my Grandmother’s were! An easey peasey recipe I will use from now on.5 stars

  13. Donatella Bennett says

I ending up having to add 1/2 cup of more liquid .. maybe a miss print? I used 1/2 cup of sour dough starter from the fridge and 1/2 cup of water turned out great : )

  14. KarmannGhiaGuy says

Whoa, the dumplings were the best part of the stew tonight! Thank you!

  15. Paul the chainsaw bloke says

Just used this idea and got exactly as promised. Well done and thankyou

  16. Christine Burns says

Thank you sooo much for this post. I love my crockpot but missed having dumplings on stews and what not so much, and now I don’t have to worry. I made them as stated but added some fresh ground pepper to the mix for flavor, and they turned out perfectly.

I had mine cook at low, the same as the recipe I was using.

  17. verucalane says

Hi Karlynn!!! I didn’t know either. In fact, I’ve never even thought about crock pot dumplings until about 10 minutes ago when I realized there was no way I’d have time to make a stovetop beef stew this week so it was gonna have to be crock pot or nothing…and then “BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DUMPLINGS?!?!?”

Thanks for sharing the technique. Wondering if it matters “high” or “low” setting for the 30 min?

  18. Melanie Harmsma says

Jim brought home a loaf of rustic sourdough from NAIT (when they bake the culinary arts programs hawk their wares!) so we’re doing slabs of bread and cheese and soup (from a can unless I find a good quick carrot soup recipe…)

  19. Jenn at Home says

great instructions!  I am using a recipe that uses cornmeal dumplings in a crock-pot, which gave me the idea that you could actually do dumplings in a crock pot, but I wanted traditional dumplings. Thank you for these instructions, I would not have figured out the tin-foil part, very smart!

  20. MindyMo says

    mmmmm. dumplings….
what temperature setting is your crock pot on when you seal it with foil to let the dumplings steam – Low or High?

    • Candida W says

Tried this and they turned out doughy and just not at all good. They were dropped in by spoonfuls and there aren’t too many. I’m not sure what happened. But there were terrible.
