This is what happens when you let me go into a garden center, on the long weekend, surround by beautiful greenery and things I CAN’T PLANT BECAUSE ITS SNOWING. Ok that was my bitterness coming through there, totally. I went to Home Depot (that in itself was enough self torture, but wait, the story continues) with the intention of finding something to replace my dead Northern Lights Azalea that croaked over the winter. Why call it “Northern Lights” when it won’t survive an Edmonton winter?
I wanted something on a trellis, I bought a wooden trellis that I am painting burgundy to match the trim on our house. Clematis and I don’t get along, I have killed 4 of them , or more accurately, our winters killed 4 of them. And I wanted something flowering for sure, so hops and Virginia Creeper were out.
So I ended up getting sucked (haha get it?) into buying another honeysuckle. I am taunted by Jane’s tales of hers surviving her railing being removed, being tromped on by workmen and it still thrives. I have killed 2 of these already, but the thought of gorgeous little red blooms keeps me coming back to try again. So I am ever hopeful that maybe putting it in the front, where its the warmest and most sheltered, that it will come back.
Not that I can even plant it today, as its -2 with little freezing bits of snow drifting down. Minus freaking 2 on the long weekend, this is the coldest I have ever remembered, and actually when I looked online, it has the record low as -3.9 in 1918! We are close to the record low, that’s how gross the weather is.
