Yes, You Can Make Rotisserie Chicken in the Slow Cooker

Say it with me: Crockpot Rotisserie Chicken. I think the heavens just opened up and the angels sang choruses of “Hallelujah, it’s what’s for dinner!” It’s seriously that good and that easy.

This is another recipe that I made only a day or two ago and had to rush, as fast as I could, to edit the photos and write it up for you. I wanted you all to have this for the weekend, as fast as possible, because I am that darn excited to share it with you.

This recipe is going to be a mainstay in your dinner rotation, I guarantee it! I already know that this is going to be THE way that I make crockpot chicken, at least when I roast it whole.

Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Slow Cooker Rotisserie Chicken

  • The secret to keeping the chicken intact and not have it fall apart is two parts; one, you simply must truss the chicken.
  • Two: Cook it on top of either a rack that fits in your slow cooker or balls of tinfoil. I used tinfoil, but boy, would I love to find a rack that fits in here!
  • Once it’s done in the slow cooker, pop it in the oven for 5 minutes to crisp up the skin and boom, you are done!

This great video will show you how to truss the chicken with or without string.

The Easiest Slow Cooker Chicken Recipe

After cooking for a good 8-9 hours, depending on your slow cooker, you end up with this beauty! We were amazed. Astounded. Absolutely in love with this new recipe. The chicken is exactly how it should be, moist, fall-off-the-bone delicious. Look at that thigh meat and yes, look at that grease. Just like store-bought.

However there is SO much less grease that I actually prefer this chicken to store-bought. The store-bought ones actually make me a little queasy from the grease on occasion!

Pop it into the oven for around 5 minutes, crisp up the skin and voila! Homemade rotisserie chicken!

My family of four demolished this slow cooker chicken.  It was like a pack of wolves descended upon it, chicken and bones flying everywhere. I can’t believe that it’s taken me this long to finally make it, I’m almost kicking myself for not having done it before!

Happy Friday everyone! I really hope you make this slow cooker chicken this weekend, let me know what you think!

Love you more than weekends!

Ingredients

  • one 4 pounds broiler/fryer chicken
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon onion soup mix crushed
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons fine sea salt
  • optional : 1/2 tsp black pepper and 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper for heat or extra salt if you like it salty!

Instructions

  • Pat chicken completely dry with paper towels.
  • Truss with or without string. (do NOT skip this step or it will fall apart in the crockpot)
  • Combine the remaining ingredients together in a small bowl until it forms a paste. If it’s too dry, add small amounts of oil until you get a good spreading consistency.
  • Rub the paste all over the chicken, inside and out., making sure not to tear the skin.
  • Wad up 4-5 balls of tinfoil, place in the bottom of the crockpot and place the chicken, breast up, on top of the foil.
  • Cover the crockpot with the lid and cook on low for 8-9 hours.
  • When the thigh area has reached a minimum of 185 degrees, carefully remove from the slow cooker and place on a baking sheet.
  • Cook for 5-7 minutes in a 450 degree oven to crisp up the skin, watching carefully.
  • Remove and serve!

I made it today. I cooked it on high for 4 hours as I didn’t have the time I needed. Delicious. I had trouble re wanting to eat the whole bird lol. In truth I am going to slice it up and freeze some so I can make other recipes including chicken quesadillas later. Thank You. Barb5 stars

When I make rotisserie chicken in the crock pot, I wrap potatoes in tinfoil and put the chicken on top. This makes an easy side dish!4 stars

I was wondering if using a crockpot bag was ok? Tinfoil balls on bottom, seasoned chicken in bag, don’t want dry chicken . It makes for easy clean up.5 stars

Hahah Ross Bellwood I am definitely tricky! This works like a hot damn and is the closest you are going to get to rotisserie chicken at home! SO good! The BBQ always dries out the chicken too much.

I haven’t looked at the recipe yet, but that’s impossible. Hey, it just jumped into my brain, you might call this “Impossible Chicken”?

  13. Anna says

I just tried making this now- I’m not an experienced cook, but I didn’t realize that you are supposed to remove the chicken innards (I just bought it from the store thinking it was good to go). The crockpot was filled almost to the top with juices. That would be my only suggestion to the recipe! Make sure you remove the innards, and maybe a link to a video that shows how to do it? Thanks again though! Awesome recipe.

  15. Dottie Bast says

This looks soo good. I can’t wait to try it. I have a coop full of 51 roosters/hens that I’ll be culling down to a dozen this fall and I will have lots of whole chickens in the freezer to dream up new ideas for. Thanks!

Just put a chicken in the crockpot using this recipe for the first time and then came back to see your post.

  17. impulsively says

I use the Prepara Silicone Roasting Laurel when roasting meats… it’s flexible so it might fit in your slow cooker.

This recipe really intrigues me as I love rotisserie chicken… but the meat doesn’t dry out? I recently tried a slow cooker chicken wing recipe and it was disastrous – the wings all fell apart and the meat had a mushy texture and was all dried out despite the sauce.

Hi there, great recipe….but!!!!! YOU NEVER EVER SHOULD WASH AND RINSE CHICKEN!!! Rigth cooked any bacteria will be done either, but spreading around with washed and rinsed chicken can hurt you for live!! Please do yourself a favour and search internet why you NEVER EVER should wash chicken !!

I think people like you who put on great recipes and have a lot followers should avise people of this for sure. Hopefully you will…Thanks a lot for your nice recipes I enjoy them sooooo much and they are really yammmmy!!!…:-)

Looking forward to your next recipe!…:-)

    • SiggyMueller says

JayJessicaHauers Not just that, but putting an entire raw chicken in a crockpot on low is also asking for trouble. From a food safety standpoint this is very dangerous. As someone who works in food service, I would recommend,  that if you are planning to cook the bird on low, make sure you start it out on high for the first hour to move the raw poultry as quickly as possible out of the danger zone and get it above 140°F internal temperature. Be aware that it takes a while for the crockpot to get up to temperature, so preheating it before you put the bird in might be a good idea. This is the reason most crockpot manufacturers do not recommend cooking large cuts of meat such as roasts and whole chickens in the crockpot.

    • Jane says

I know this is an old post, but I suggest you do wash out the inside of your chicken get your hands in it and really clean, just use water or salted water. Dry with paper towels after. Turkeys and other fowl too.
I always….every time find guts that were left in the cavity, lungs and kidneys, wind pipes, crops and more.
After giver your sink a good scrubbing and rinse well followed by a bleach rinse

  19. ToGrillAndChill says

Karlynn, this sounds like an excellent way to cook a bird that is beautiful! I am very impressed with how delicious that looks and must have tasted. A must try. I think that recipe could also work for  a beer can chicken on the stones. Yep, I know, but if you are home the stone. Running about, the slow cooker 🙂 Thanks for this.

Just put in my crockpot and am looking forward to serving a chicken tonight looking just as pretty & tasty looking as yours! Had to make my own onion soup mix as I haven’t bought it in years due to the sodium content (health restrictions by doc blah blah blah) so am hoping the onion soup mix recipe I chose will suffice in the flavor dept. Used half smoked paprika and half Spanish paprika just in case though.

Thanks for posting the recipe Karlynn, the idea, the ease, is fabulous & your outcome looks even more fabulous!
