Ah the Scotch and Soda. It’s such a simple, easy to make drink that has stood the test of time and continues to do so. What I especially like about this combination of ingredients is the flavor of the scotch comes through so nicely that it really is a great way to mix things up if you prefer to not drink your scotch straight or on the rocks.

What is a Scotch and Soda?

A Scotch and soda is a basic Scotch cocktail comprised of Scotch Whisky combined with Club Soda and served up in old fashioned or highball glass. There are no firm measurements per se making this drink easy to scale to your preferences.

Why drink a Scotch and Soda?

There’s nothing wrong with a good Scotch served up in a Scotch glass but sometimes we want something a bit more on the refreshing side.

A Scotch and Soda is a great way to enhance your Scotch tasting experience because adding club soda (or any type of water) to Scotch / whisky alters the aroma and taste of the spirit.

Often, when attending Scotch tastings, you’ll be presented with the option to insert a drop or two of water into your Scotch glass to experience how it changes the flavor profile and aroma. You’ll experience similar changes when using club soda in your drink as well, given that it’s just carbonated water. I highly encourage you to try it!

There are plenty of other whisky cocktails you can try on this website as well so be sure to give them a go!

How to Make a Scotch and Soda

To make a Scotch and soda, measure your desired amount of Scotch into your glass of choice and top with Club Soda. Give it a light stir (so as not to displace too many bubbles and flatten the drink) and serve. You can garnish with a lemon or orange twist as desired.

How Much Soda Do You Add?

How much soda you add depends on what type of flavor and drinking experience you are interested in having. Are you interested in an easy sipping drink with less punch from the Scotch? Use a tall tumbler with some ice and a long pour of club soda. Want to just add a bit of water to your Scotch but not take away too much of the flavor? Use an old fashioned glass and a short pour of club soda. As you can see, it’s easy to modify to your individual tastes.

In this recipe, we’ll give you our personal preferences for measurements but feel free to adjust as desired and experiment until you find a combination that suits your tastes.
