Cooking a Roast in an Instant Pot
How to Cook a Roast in your Instant Pot

This is the BEST Way to Cook a Roast in your Instant Pot!

Raise your hand if a good blade or chuck roast is your favourite roast beef to make.

Me, me and me again.

There is nothing like a long, slow cooked chuck roast where the fat melts away and leaves you with tender, juicy bits of delicious beef. It also is fantastic that you can cook it for a good 9-10 hours in a crockpot.

Who bought themselves an Instant Pot this past year?

While they have been around for a while, I think that NOW they are really becoming mainstream, as in not only food bloggers have Instant Pots, that type of mainstream.  I bought mine last summer when they were on for an incredibly cheap price on Prime Day and I swear that it hasn’t left my counter for more than three days since then.

The very first thing that you need to learn is how to make a blade/chuck roast in your Instant Pot. Seriously. You will thank me for this later.

cooking blade roasts in the instant pot

If you use a slow cooker/crockpot, you need to own one of these. I kid you not, I can’t remember the last time I was so happy with an appliance. The ability to cook a blade/chuck roast in your instant pot in 120 minutes thanks to the high pressure option is incredible. I was running late that day and had these two roasts that I had picked up to make for supper. I put them on at 4 pm and we were eating by 6.

CRAZY AMAZING THIS INSTANT POT IS.

Sorry for the Yoda talk there briefly.

However, cooking those two blade / chuck roasts in the Instant Pot at the end of a very busy day was a lifesaver. I popped them in, threw some ingredients on top ( in the recipe below) and we were eating the best blade roast ever.

What usually takes a day in the slow cooker was achieved by the high pressure setting on my Instant Pot in two hours.

I usually make two roasts so that I have leftovers to eat all week, because there is nothing like leftover blade roast with eggs on top for a massive protein hit in the morning for breakfast.

Leftover blade roast is amazing on salads, in sandwiches and just by itself. I always make sure to make extra!

It looks like there are some great deals on the Instant Pot right now!

I honestly don’t know how I used to live without my Instant Pot. I use it for slow cooking, I use it for soup at least once a week ( the high pressure cooks soups in a SNAP! Love it!) and now this whole Best Blade Roast Ever in the Instant Pot? Ugh. In love. I’ve been trying to convince my mom and sister that they need an Instant Pot and I think after my mom saw how quickly it cooks a roast, she’s on board.cooked Blade/Chuck Roast, shredded beef in a fork

How to Cook a Roast in the Instant Pot Tips & Tricks

  • You really do need to cook a blade or chuck roast for 120 minutes. Blade and chuck roasts are very tough and have fibers that absolutely need to be broken down by cooking, and cooking for a long time. Theses roasts take 8-10 hours in the crockpot, so 2 hours in the Instant Pot is definitely the way to go!
  • You need liquid and not just liquid you need DELICIOUS liquid. Food can be a bit bland when pressure cooking so you need to spice up!
  • If you have a roast that is from a quality butcher, you can try cooking it at 90 minutes. Grocery store roasts are generally lower quality. Play it by ear based on the meat quality of the roast you are cooking.
  • Thick roasts may need to be cooked a little longer as it’s thickness that determines how those fibers are going to break down inside.

Just writing this post up makes me want to make this roast again. It’s similar to that Mississippi roast in the fact that I use a package of dry Ranch dressing in it, but there’s no peppers. Trust me, the dry Ranch dressing makes this delicious!

Happy cooking everyone!

Love,

Karlynn

Man! this came out amazing and I only had 1 packet of enchilada mix, 1.5 oz of poultry gravy mix and 1 whole onion chopped with 1 cup water…OMG this came out amazing! I would post pics but it all got ate already lol…took the broth n droppings and put in jar with lid and refrigerated. The fat and gravy separated so I removed it and added to leftovers that I put in frying pan with over easy eggs for breakfast…this is definitely a goto recipe for me now!5 stars

  2. Sonja Stein says

Thank you for the explanations! Excited to try. Your instructions sound like you put the roast in the water, then sprinkle the packets on top. Put the lid on and cook. So clarification was nice!

  3. Raymond Thomas says

Got roast in instapot it’s 3:00 will eat at about 5:30 , thanks I’m getting my bib on early

  4. Shannon says

No you don’t need a Trivet (metal to raise the roast). However, it can be done either way, but the packets of seasoning need to go into the liquid. I prefer the Trivet as it keeps my of liquids at bottom which changes the cooking of the roast for the bottom portion of it. And yes, your roast should be defrosted and then browned (oil in pan on med. high heat) on all sides. Yes, just use high pressure and set time, I would not use an automatic meat setting for the pot. Your pot may default to 30 minutes but as you hit the pressure cook button there should be a plus or minus sign to increase/decrease the minutes. By the way, there’s no such thing as a stupid question. How do people learn if they don’t ask. There is however such a thing as stupid answer. I guess some people might make themselves feel better by calling names but it’s a way to try to compensate for something they are lacking. Like decency.

  5. Lexi says

Do you cut the time in half if the roast is only 2.5 lbs?

  6. Shannon says

WOW🤣🤣🤣Tell us you didn’t read this before making yourself look silly on here without telling us you didn’t even read it! 😁😁😆😂🤣🤣

  7. Krissy says

Going to try this today. This recipe the roast does not need a trivet? I just want to be sure before I make it. 😀

  9. Linda says

do I put my roast on top of the wire holder or just put it in the water

  10. Dianna Ellis says

This was delish. Used mushroom gravy packet and 8oz of cremini mushrooms. Thickened with corn starch. Served with rice mixed with peas. Thanks for the tip about longer time for a thicker cut of meat. I pressured for 90 min. Fall apart tender5 stars

  11. Kaley says

poor instructions. step one place water and meat in. ok how much water?
step two put the rest of the package ontop, what rest of package? we never used a package yet.
cook for 120 mins, how big is your roast? is this 2 pounds, 20 pounds?1 star

    • Jo Hancock says

Maybe you didn’t read the ingredients for the recipe – it called for 1 cup water, 1 envelope of gravy mix, 1 envelope of ranch dressing mix, 1 envelope of onion soup mix. Put the roast in the water, add all the packets, cook 2 hours and ENJOY. Hint: You can catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar. Wishing you a delicious roast and a joyful day!

Wasn’t sure about how to cook this roast for 120 minutes when my pressure pot goes to only 30 minutes

I have been waterboarded on many a recipe, longing for the person posting the recipe to get to the f’n point. Many of them I can sum up with, I spent a summer there one afternoon. This however, is not one of those. Comparatively speaking this one was straight and to the point. Excellent recipe 5 stars!!!!5 stars

Thank you for being brave enough to cook for 2 hours. I have always added time to my pot roast recipes and still felt it needed more time to break down the fibers. Thank you 🥰5 stars

I used this recipe and it was very, very good. I made rice in the IP afterwords with broccoli mixed in. Turned out fabulous! I would make this again, so easy!

    • Sarah says

Did you cook your beef from frozen? If so what cook time in the IP?

      • Reisch says

I just want know how long to cook a 2.6 lb roast in my instant pot nothing else just the meat please.

        • Loralee says

I would think if they cooked a 5 lb roast for 2 hrs…you’d do half that??

      • Cassie says

This looks delicious, but my Instant Pot doesn’t have the meat/stew button. Can I just use the regular pressure cook setting?

        • lorraine kelly says

Sear it in a large pan on your oventop, put in some olive oil and just brown on each side then go to the instapot and do everything else. Your instapot can also just be turned on and use it to sear the meat which also gives more flavor. Don’t overthink it you will be fine
