Karlynn’s Recipe Notes

  • Skill Level: This recipe is simple but requires some precision.
  • Total Time: Making this omelet will take about 10 minutes from start to finish.
  • Variations: You can try using a different type of cheese, maybe something spicy. Use cooked bacon or turkey bacon instead of ham. Try adding some more vegetables, like some diced mushrooms or zucchini. Add some seasonings to your eggs or a drizzle of hot sauce on your finished omelet.
  • Tools Needed: For this recipe, you’ll need an 8-inch skillet, a cutting board, a knife, a pancake flipper (spatula or whatever you normally use), a medium bowl, and a whisk or fork.

What You’ll Need For Ingredients

Eggs: Fresh eggs are always best, but this is a recipe that would probably also work with eggs or egg whites from a carton.

Fat: A good quality butter would be the ultimate choice for this omelet. Salted or unsalted is fine. If you haven’t got butter, you can try margarine or another plant-based alternative but you may have more issues with the eggs sticking to the pan.

Filling: Make sure that whatever meat you add is precooked, and that whichever vegetables you use are cut up small enough to cook quickly. You’ll also want to try to avoid excess liquid from your veggies. Any shredded cheese will work, so have fun and use your favourite one.

How To Make a Denver Omelet

This is a brief overview of the recipe. The full list of ingredients and step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card below.

  1. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs. Set aside.
  2. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in 8-inch skillet. Add onions and peppers. Sauté until tender.
  3. Add ham and cook for 1 more minute.
  4. Pour beaten eggs over the ham and vegetables. Turn burner to low and cover skillet with a lid. Cook for 4-5 minutes, until eggs are solid and mostly cooked.
  5. Remove lid, flip eggs and cook for 1 minute. Add cheese to one side of the omelet and fold the other side over to make a half-circle shape. Let the cheese melt for a few seconds.
  6. Remove omelet from pan, serve hot with a garnish of parsley.

Karlynn’s Tips and Tricks for Making a Denver Omelet

Cheesy Timing: While you can mix cheese directly into eggs, you’ll find that most recipes ask you to hold off on the cheese until near the end of the cooking. Adding the cheese after the eggs are cooked keeps the cheese from burning on the pan, or liquifying in the eggs while they cook. This gives you the proper gooey, melty cheese experience.

Sticky Eggs: The butter in this recipe should help to keep your eggs from sticking to the pan, but you also need to make sure to cook the omelet on low. A low temperature will make burning the eggs less likely, especially if you’re using a nonstick pan. If in doubt, you can add more fat to your pan or use a pan specifically designed for omelets.

Storage Instructions

Eat this fresh! If you absolutely have to save it for later, you can keep it in a sealed container in your fridge for 1-2 days, but it will start to get watery. You could absolutely prep all of your toppings and fillings in advance and store them in your fridge for a day or two, taking them out right as you need them.
