Children's Book Review: Kids' Fun & Healthy Cookbook

With our children being bombarded by unhealthy food choices every direction they look, The Kids’ Fun & Healthy Cookbook is a refreshing change of pace. Full of fantastic pictures, tips and tricks, this is the perfect starter cookbook for any young chef-to-be, or a good way to entice your  children to take more of an interest in their food.  The introduction covers the important basics, such as kitchen hygiene and safe cooking, moving on to explaining the food groups using bold, colorful photographs and simple, understandable text.

Good, valid nutritional advice is scattered throughout the book as well; how to cut down on unhealthy fats, sugary foods and eating too much salt, which are balanced by teaching about the good fats that we need in our diets as well as how to substitute one food for another healthier one.

All the recipes in this book are healthy with a primary emphasis on proteins, fruits and vegetables in most of the recipes, making most of them extremely vegetarian friendly, and if the main recipe happens to have meat in it, there is sometimes an accompanying note explaining what vegetarian products can be substituted.

I love that some of the recipes venture into some culinary areas that most kids will not be familiar with, such as the recipe for chicken drumsticks that use a tandoori spice blend and yogurt. Recipes such as Italian Tuna Pasta can possibly encourage kids to try fish (I will be trying this one on my kids!) since the sauces are tasty and can over-ride that fishy flavor that my kids just can’t seem to stomach yet.
