One of the main reasons that my posts slow down and the recipes are a little few and far between for the month of March is because I head up a big Cook Off at my children’s school here in Edmonton. I’m completely swamped and posting here just is the last thing on my mind.

Born from the fact that I have judged many of these contests/cook off’s myself over the years I finally figured huh, why not just have one of my own at the kids school? I can stop selling cookie dough or plants and just have one huge event a year to make all the money at once?

And so the Culinary Arts Cook Off was born last year.

And we stopped selling cookie dough. And Entertainment books. And did I mention how much I hate cookie dough?

Now,  we all know that the real winners of the 2013 Culinary Arts Cook Off are our children! Thanks to the efforts of all eight participating restaurants, we brought in over $16,000 on Saturday that is going towards the Arts Core programming at Mount Royal school.

So I would like to take this moment to thank each and every one of the restaurants for participating, without them, there is no cook off! No delicious food to fill our bellies as we wander the school bidding on silent auction items, trying to figure out where our children went, getting photos taken in the photo booth.

So a big thank you and hurrah! for all the restaurants listed on the poster below! Make sure to stop by and check them out, the way to say thank you is to be sure you make them a first choice when going out for lunch or dinner!

However this is a cook off and someone had to take home some honors!

The Judges Choice went to the team at Murrieta’s.  Chef’s Jesse Woodland (pictured) and Gregory Malcolm dazzled the judges panel with their dim sum slider!

murrietasWe love the high-five from Chef Stanley Townsend.

murrieta1sThe winning slider!  A fabulous Dim Sum slider, with a maple ginger aioli and wonton crisps on a honey bun.

Are you drooling yet?

dumsumThe Marc won People’s Choice for a second year running, with their  ” The Big Marc”  topped with sauerkraut and bacon jam winning  the peoples heart. The Marc also wins a spot at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show tomorrow night where they are going to cook up their winning slider!

We were very happy to have Brian Mason (leader of Alberta  NDP and MLA for the area of Edmonton Highlands-Norwood;)  back to present the People’s Choice to the winners.

The Big Marc. Bacon jam. Sauerkraut. Amazing!

Since this event is all for the kids at Mount Royal. we couldn’t have a cook off without a panel of children judging the sliders and making their own choice. These four judges wrote essays to win their judging positions, congrats to them all!

The kids are presenting  their award to their top choice of the day,  Chef Alex Sneazwell and Chef Shannon McNainy of The Manor Casual Bistro.

The Manor’s slider was a bacon cheddar burger with “fries”, a delightfully smart play on the classic combo. The slider had a fried potato in it to add the “fries” in there and the kids (and the crowd!)  loved it!  They sold out of their great slider before the live auction even ended!

So again, thank you to all of the participants, we can’t wait to have you back for 2014!

Once more pictures come in I will be writing about the rest of the fun that was happening all around the school on March 16th, there were so many amazing things going on!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
