Holiday Baking Saviour: The Paper Box

I have deviated far from my usual modus operandi at Christmas time, which involves me and the Reuse Center for an hour or so, picking through the cookie tins that have been donated there.

I had the lovely experience of being alone in a Michaels store a week or so ago meaning I actually had the time to pick around and see what they had in stock, rather than shouting “Don’t touch that!” or “Oh my ever loving Lord, put BACK the squishy ball/crazy pen/random stuff intended to grab my child’s attention” and generally having my head swiveling around like Linda Blair.

And I discovered that the Holiday line by Paula Deen was on sale 40% off.

Thankeee, Paula Deen, for saving Christmas.

These delightful little boxes fit 9 large pieces of fudge perfectly on the bottom:

And nine slightly overlapping whipped shortbread cookies on the top.

Close it up, and you have a lovely little window. The Ukrainian in me started screaming deep inside me at one point that it’s not enough! You must feed everyone! More!

I tell that little inside voice that a little gift of quality goodies is perfect enough. Quality, not quantity.

So I tell that voice, but it still doesn’t shut up.

And then thanks to the matching gift tags, you have a beautiful little gift.

The cheapo in me – must be some Scottish by osmosis in my blood due to marrying into the Johnston’s who are also mixed with some Scott’s - wouldn’t have paid full price for these, but I calculated that each box with tag cost me less than $2.

I can handle not only the price but breaking with tradition this year. Every year seems to be getting busier and busier and the days of the tins and foraging for them might be long gone. I also like that these are recyclable, while the tins I used the past years I was in essence recycling myself, you are never sure what the receivers are going to do with them after that.

They have a lovely selection at Micheals, I would be getting those 40% coupons ready. Martha Stewart had some gorgeous divided ones, but these were easier on my pocketbook.

I was so excited to finally use these today!

Absolutely gorgeous! I have always bought the plain white or brown boxes from the packaging store with NO peek through window - and some nice ribbon. I love this idea. SO pretty! :) Lucky "getters" Valerie
