Happy Christmas May 30th!

Ok, before I get the usual “You live in Alberta, what did you expect?” lecture, lemme sum up.

Yes, I expected the snow. It’s May. In Alberta.

Yes, I expected to have to cover up my garden. It’s May. In Alberta.

What I did not expect, was that it went down to 0 Celsius last night.

Zero. Zip. Freezing point. Zilch.

What. The. Hell. People.

And it might have dipped below, because the van thermometer registered zero at 10:30 last night when I came home from work.

When you look at the Edmonton Journal’s weather today, it says for the record low:

“Low 0.0 °C (1954)”

Nineteen fifty four, folks.

So my garden is out and planted. And probably toast. I did not forsee freezing temps. Who could blame me? It’s been 50 years since the last time it hit zero!

My globeflowers were totally snowed over, but they will survive.

My daughter is wearing snowpants and a winter coat to play.

Luckily I have a husband who sometimes gets pretty innovative, and the garden DID get covered, and well, last night.

Yes, that’s a kiddie pool over my tomatoes.

And there they be. Sigh. I know that the cauliflower/celery/strawberries will be fine, but the tomatoes and the squash…oh I am thinking they are not.

It was just too cold, even if they are covered and half-toasty in there.

I’m thinking I better be checking out the plants section at Superstore to see if I can get more tomatoes before the rest of Edmonton wakes up and realizes their gardens are blitzed too.
