I’d like to introduce my latest series here on The Kitchen Magpie called The Food Blogger Confessions.

Oh, you know this is going to be good because anything that has the word “confessions” in it simply must be entertaining

To use a completely over-used phrase that almost always pops up on blogs:

This series is about keeping it real.

The number of times that I have tried to correct misconceptions or skewed perceptions not only about this blog but my real life in general are countless. It’s very hard, as a blogger, to juggle a website that shows only what you want it to show while still reassuring people that you are real, make mistakes, yell at your kids, burn dinner and more. The fine balance between being a good writer and spreading cheer while still “keeping it real” ….. but always being keenly aware you are running the risk of turning into that writer who moans and complains about everything.

I do, of course, post on social media about my imperfect children, my messy house and more, but I’d like to delve deeper and settle myself into the confessional more comfortably once a week or so. Note the “or so” in that sentence. My many imperfections include not being on time for posts on this site. PieDay every Friday last year just about killed me.

I’ve been collecting pictures for a few months now, those little snaps of my life that just shriek “Ha! If you only knew!” .

Well, now you are going to know because as soon as that thought shrieked in my head, I would grab my camera and click away, saving that moment.

The latest moment is the one I am going to start with for my first Confession because it’s the one that spurred me on.

Confession #1. I make the worst food choices when I am busy.

pre-made Kraft dinner bowl with spoon in it and three pieces of tarts

This Monday saw me up early to head on over to the CTV studios to do two recipes with the lovely Stacey Brotzel on CTV Morning Live. This was the first time that I had to do a double-header for recipes on TV and my first time on CTV.

Adding to that, I also promised that the recipes would be up and live on my website Monday for the viewers as well.

As soon as the TV gig was over, I rushed home to not only write and post the recipes but bake up a new batch of treacle tarts at the same time as I needed new tarts for the main post pictures.

After making a mess of the kitchen as per usual I was shooting the picture of the tarts and realized that I hadn’t eaten anything other than two boiled eggs at 6 am.

So what do I do?

I grabbed a pre-made Kraft dinner bowl that was brought home from the trailer last weekend. I’d like to pretend that the fact that it was whole wheat made it better, but it doesn’t.

I continued to shoot the photos while eating, looked down and saw the above shot in my mind and thought “Ha! If only they knew.”

Gorgeous, homemade tarts with a bowl of Kraft dinner in front of it. There’s that juxtaposition of real and imagined.

So instead of fostering the notion that as a food blogger I make myself a gorgeous lunch everyday, while puttering around in my kitchen and writing up delicious recipes, I’d rather cop to the truth.

Just like everyone else, I have turned to processed junk food when I am busy and not only that, I most likely will continue to do so.

My social media is on the top right if you just want to stop following me now. I will understand.

Love,
