Happy Birthday To My Beautiful Girl

kids9

Happy 6th Birthday to my beautiful girl, my littlest love, my last baby. What a year this has been for you, full of so many firsts and accomplishments for such a little girl. Going to Grade One and being away from home all day, surprising your mama with how well you adapted, how much you love your school and the zest with which you tackled that new adventure. Thank you for always reminding me of … [Read more...]

Merry Christmas From the Magpies

Edmonton-Family-Photography-12

Merry Christmas to all of you, from our crazy family. May your holidays be filled with love, laughter and your family surrounding you. Cherish the twinkle in your children's eyes as they experience the wonder of giving and of course, the magic of too much chocolate combined with the glee of new toys and over zealous relatives kissing their cheeks at every given moment. Enjoy your family. … [Read more...]

Happy Birthday, My Beautiful Boy

mrk3

Happy 8th birthday to my first baby, the little soul responsible for making me a mother eight years ago today. I can't believe that 8 years have passed already. I am amazed how blessed I feel on a daily basis to be your Mom, that you have been given to me in this journey called life, to guide you, love you and enjoy all the little moments life has to offer us. Thank you for making me proud … [Read more...]

Bad Mother Gives Away Her Children’s Halloween Candy

halloweencandy2

Every November 1st or 2nd, depending on when Halloween falls, my husband loads up all the leftover candy from Halloween - including about 70% of my kids stash- and drops it off where it's needed. The past two years have been the Boyle Center, here in Edmonton, who are more than grateful to accept candy donations from Edmontonians. Yes. I just said we give away our children's candy.  There goes … [Read more...]

For the Love of a Mug

mug1

Sometimes a post will just come out of nowhere, a random thought snatched out of my fuzzy brain at any given time, the proverbial lightbulb going off and *ping* I think to myself. "Self, you could write a post about this." Others follow a very traceable chain of events such as the one tonight. I posted on my Facebook page as my status :" If I don't order furniture soon, the echoing on the main … [Read more...]

My Little Fisher Girl

buds

There's definitely something about watching your dad teach your children to fish, but I am not so sure I can put a name to it. That certain something makes your heart clench in your chest with love for both of them, tears start to burn ever so slightly at the back of your eyes and all the memories of fishing with your father come flooding back to the forefront of your mind. If you … [Read more...]

Float Like a Dragon…

moves3

..sting like a Frisbee! Get it? Har de har har, don't quit your day job, Magpie. Listen, it's all I could come up with at the moment, it's weak I know. But it was there and I just had to. Speaking of Frisbee, it's apparent my son did not inherit his moves from me. That slick move right above would have landed me on my face somehow, with a broken bone thrown in for good measure. He has … [Read more...]

It’s A Bird…It’s a Plane..

kite2

..or it's a freaking huge flying dragon that's gonna gobble up your children, eat the poor fat farm horse for dessert  and burn down your barn with his fierce, fiery breath. Run for cover! Or mayhaps it's the huge kite that my dad picked up for the grandkids this past winter, hoarding it silently until the time was right. Until the wind was up, the children were out and the … [Read more...]

Bubbles

longweekend8

Ah, bubbles. Entrancing to young and old, tantalizing to all with the desperate want, nay, the need to pop them almost as soon as they are formed. And my children were no exception this past weekend thanks to beautiful weather and their mother being armed to the teeth with bubble containers for outdoor acreage fun. And fun it was. Even my 7 year old still loves bubbles, he will … [Read more...]

Scenes From Calgary

oats2_512x683

While on spring break, I took the kids out to my parents place, so they could enjoy all that farm kids do for a few days. Without the chores, of course. Lucky little turkeys just get to go and play "county kid", while their poor mother grew up country kid with all the chores that came with it. Let's just say it involved more grass cutting than I will ever cut in the city in the whole … [Read more...]

Check Out Kevin in the Journal

pronghorn1_512x384

When perusing the Edmonton Journal online today, relaxing with a Tim's after enjoying the whirlwind that is Shumka (post to come later of course) I noticed a title on the front page: Edmonton financial planner is one versatile foodie. You literally have to be living under a virtual foodie rock in Edmonton, or have never read my blog - and in that case, what's wrong with you?- to not figure … [Read more...]

A Big Thank You

blinds1_512x384

As I sit down to plan the next round of fundraising for my kids school - it's neverending, who knew?- I realized that I should be thanking everyone who participated in the last fundraiser from before Christmas, we raised enough money to top off the blackout blinds fund and bought them. And here they are! Or at least, some of them. They cover all the windows in the gym so not only can we … [Read more...]

Why Mommy Drinks Wine. And Lots Of It.

theprincess

There were a lot of titles in the running for this post, I could barely choose one. Some of the runners up were: Why I Have Slept With One Eye Open For The Last 5 Years. Why I Never Get Anything Done During Daylight Hours. I Know, Deep Down Inside, That It's Wrong to Drink During The Day. But Why? You Believe Me NOW? Huh??!! DO YOU??!! I .Told .You. So. My daughters escapades … [Read more...]

Lately…

bowling_512x384

I was in denial, thinking that things would settle down once Mike was back from all his traveling and training across North America. Fool that I am, I had some baking projects in mind, de-cluttering of the house-mainly the basement- and starting some serious thinking about what I am planting this spring. I, uh, made some muffins today, does that count for something? The recipe will be coming … [Read more...]

Spring Hopes Eternal

girlie_512x683

Oh, my littlest love. I know you want spring to be here. I know that you were so excited about the "puddles" on the street that you raced inside to put on the new rain gear that Auntie Kandice bought you for your 5th birthday. I love that even though Mommy said you couldn't play in the street - sorry about that, I'll try harder to be less of a helicopter parent- you were determined to get … [Read more...]

Feel My Parenting Pain

chicken11

I don't understand my son's hatred of almost all things chicken. It's almost eerie and makes me wonder what I did. Because we all know that children's issues stem from the mother's screw ups, right? (HA!) I have my children's therapy jar in the kitchen on top of the fridge, easy access  to throw in a couple loonies every time I do something I just know will come up in their future therapy … [Read more...]

A Reintroduction to Arthur the Horse

arth4_512x384

Since so many of my posts get lost in the hugeness of the site and I have so many more people who are reading this site than I did a year ago, while fixing my older posts I like to bring them back. Especially ones introducing family members. And make no mistake, Arthur is a family member. So for those of you who haven't met Arthur read on and enjoy. Original titles are not my … [Read more...]

You Know You’re An Albertan When…

snowstorn_512x384

...you have no problem using child labor to get your van out of the snow so you can go to work. I can't believe I made it out of that mess today, but it was only with the help of my husband literally pushing me out onto the main road. Now I just need to get home tonight after my shift and try to park somehow. Which might just mean me roaring into my completely un-plowed residential … [Read more...]

My Little Lego Heart

legoletter

The elder of my two little hearts, also known as my children, or devils' spawn, depending on my mood, spent the evening with his dad as I went in to work tonight. I am sure you already know, if you read this blog, that we love Lego in this family and my son wanted nothing but Lego for Christmas. I love Harry Potter. My son loves to read Harry Potter. I love that my son can read and … [Read more...]

Blissed Out

zoe2_512x384

My daughter may have been up hacking all night long due to a cold. She may be incredible cranky and tired and sniffly and sad. But how can you NOT be cheered up when a little Westie comes and not only curls up beside you, but decides to  literally sit back and lounge like a human and watch Busytown Mysteries with you? She even has her leg up on the armrest and the whatchooo lookin' at? … [Read more...]
